In order to find out what tequila is made of, I was honored to get on an excursion to one place where the plants from which grow and make real Mexican tequila. What tequila is made of in Mexico, I'll tell you a little later, but for now I'll tell you about an excursion to the blue agave plantation.

Excursion to the plantation "blue agave"

Everyone knows that Mexico is the birthplace of tequila, and the blue agave plantations from which Mexican real tequila is made are located only here, in the state of Jalisco. During the excursion, I managed to visit the picturesque plantations of blue agave and was simply amazed at its size.

Blue agave plants grow to a height of 12 meters, it feels like I was in the middle of a jungle with a dry climate. All the tourists who were next to me tried for some reason to climb this plant in search of a beautiful photograph, but they did not succeed, it was funny to watch from the side.

As a bonus, on this excursion, one could take a picture in national Mexican costumes with a glass of a real fragrant drink. Further, after a walk to the blue agave plantation, we were invited to taste freshly made tequila.

By the way, the blue agave plant is recognized by UNESCO as part of the World Natural Heritage. The whole tasting takes place traditionally, first you need to lick the salt off your finger, then drink the contents of the glass and only then have a bite of lime. The drink tastes like ordinary vodka with a strength of 55 degrees, after drinking a few glasses I was no longer up to the excursion.

In the morning, oddly enough, my head did not hurt at all. Tequila is an expensive pleasure, having tried it once, the desire to repeat it did not appear.

What tequila is made of in Mexico, the process of making a real drink

I think you already guessed what tequila is made of, it is made from blue agave plants growing in Mexico. The very process of breeding the blue agave plant has long passed into human territory, it is bred at home.

It is worth noting that true blue agave grows only in the territory of several states in the wild. In its free form, the plant grows in very dry climates, many farmers still prefer the choice of a wild plant, from which real tequila is obtained.

Homemade blue agave grows for about 5 years, then it is cut down, and the juice from the core of the plant is used to make Mexican vodka - tequila. After the core of the plant has been cut down, it is steamed in an oven at a temperature of 70 degrees for about two days.

In such a hot process of preparing tequila, a large amount of juice is released. Then the blue agave cools down, it is crushed and the last remnants of the juice are squeezed out. All the resulting juice is mixed with an ingredient called yeast and left to ferment for 10 days.

After aging the mixture, an almost finished tequila with a strength of 10 degrees is obtained. But after several distillations (distillation), the drink is already much stronger, the strength reaches 55 degrees. Now you know what tequila is made of.

To prevent the drink from spoiling during long storage, they use special barrels for bourbon or cognac, about which barrels are better for wine or cognac has already been my separate article, be sure to read, very interesting.

Tequila has been stored in such casks for decades, you will be lucky if you try real aged tequila, as its cost skyrockets and is very difficult to get, but they say that it tastes excellent.

Apart from the process of making tequila, you can tell a lot about Mexico, for example, about the ancient Mayan culture and the city of Coba or about the exotic that can be seen in Mexico, if you are in this country for the first time as a tourist, then be sure to read my articles, you will have a desire visit this country many more times!
